We all know the saying “sticks and stones”. Most of us heard that in school growing up. I remember it from my elementary school, probably before third grade. That statement has carried me through lots of scrapes and bumps in life when hurtful words are spoken in my direction.

The exciting thing that we see again and again in the life of Jesus and his students/interns is the high value they put on the Word of God, scripture. From Matthew 1, “22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:…” They used scripture to help them understand and live. Here it is stated just as a fact. Jesus was born of a virgin because the scripture said it was going to work that way. Why did they come to live this way? How did they come to trust the scripture so well?

One of the things I want you to watch on this adventure is how Jesus uses scripture. We will see in the “Desert Expedition” of our study that Jesus used scripture to overcome temptation. Personally, I have not yet tested it when I am tempted by chocolate cake but possibly could. After all, Jesus was fasting. He said, “man lives by the Word of God.”

Think about what God’s Word says about followers of Jesus. As you read Matthew look for the kingdom statements and follower statements. “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.”

PRAYER: Lord, help me to watch Your Word. I want my life to bear much fruit. Like the”blessed” folks that are spoken of in Psalm 1. I want to be fruitful today and every day. May Jesus’ name be shared through me today. – Amen
