Why are personal trainers so popular today? We live in a generation that is wholly committed to personal freedom. Think about it. We all feel that we need to be treated with respect and valued. We then go find someone who will check our weight, tell us what to eat, and then push us to almost abusive states of physical stress. I realize not everyone has signed up for this but why do we do it? We know that on our own we are less likely to succeed. We all need leadership. We don’t always lead ourselves well.

God saw our need for a spiritual personal trainer. This is not to lessen Jesus’ redemptive work, but the leadership piece was just as important. In Matthew 2, we have the account of the Magi from the East and Herod’s anger against the baby born in a manger in a stable. Here Jesus’ role as a guide is revealed. The Jewish teachers quote Matthew 2:6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

What the world was waiting for was a leader. Someone who knew how to lead us to what we needed for a better life. The Bible paints this picture of a good shepherd. Someone who would lay down his life for the sheep while feeding and caring for them and directing them to the best place to live.

The best part of Matthew’s message is he believes we can participate. Matthew wrote to let us know Jesus came. He also wrote to say you can follow, too. You can even be a part of leading others to join in the adventure.

PRAYER: Lord, Thank You! I need spiritual directions. Help me hear Your voice. I give You permission to speak to me today. Feel free to correct, encourage, or guide me to greener pastures. – Amen
